My mom went to college in New Haven. We live in maine, but at least once every six months, we drive down for some pizza. I have been to New York, Philly, Boston, New Haven, all over the place. Pepes is the best. |

My wife and I, who are of Polish/Lithuanian and Irish decent respectively, invited her longtime girl-friend and her husband to Pepe's about 20 years ago on the Fourth of July. Although, they were of Italian decent and had lived in CT all their lives, I was surprised that they had never been to Pepe's. Anyway, we stood in line on Wooster Street (Which is considered Little Italy in New Haven) for the requisite 60 minutes, in the late afternoon. We periodically observed rather large bottle rockets going off over the neighborhood and noticed a larger than usual amount of people on the street, but didn't think much about it. We finally got into Pepe's and our guests were blown away by the pies, as expected. As we left however, Wooster Street was packed with people! We didn't know what was going on and started up the street to where we had parked our car. Just up the street, before our car, there's a small park and the crowd of people were especially deep surrounding this area and a number of men were standing around smoking big cigars and standing next to boxes. Just as we got there, all hell broke loose! The cigar guys all of a sudden began to light off thousands of firecrackers, cherry bombs and possibly M-80's! The smoke, concussions and noise were unbelievable! It went on for what seemed like 15 or 20 minutes, at least! It was the most intense and impressive fireworks display I had ever seen. It seemed like it was not an "officially sanctioned" holiday event, but the New Haven Police never showed up and CT outlawed all "non-professional" fireworks, at the time. However, the Wooster Street neighborhood has it's own private security system. I haven't been back to Wooster Street on the 4th of July since, but I still fondly remember the day I was blown away by Pepe's and Wooster Street in more ways than one! |

They are so over rated...I think that Sally's puts them to shame...Try Tolli's in East Haven for some great pizza.
Pepe's service sucks.
They have good pizza, I will say that.
But the best? Not by a longshot... |

Yeah yeah. Great Pizza. Yeah, great white clam sauce. Many think that Sally's Pizza to the left and a block away is it's equal or better. Try them both. Make up your own mind. On a summer night, both have equally long lines down the sidewalk. |

I grew up in New Haven and have lived in MA, NY and DC, and there is no pizza like Pepe's. The white clam pizza is amazing, and I hear part of the reason is that they use coal ovens which get extremely hot. The top NYC restuarateurs check out Pepe's to see how it's done. |
