I think the cuisine is pretty good but the service and attitude of the staff needs a lot of improvement. |

Great Italian food. Probably the best in the Wallingford area. Definitely not your average tomato sauce and pasta place. Casual gourmet. Lot's of great Tuscan recipes. The pizza is awesome as well. A very small dining room so make sure to call ahead for reservations as it can fill up quick. |

Appetizers at Fratelli's are a real treat. At a recent luncheon the fried calamari were a little larger than what I'm used to but they were so tender. The breading was light and tasty with flakes of herbs throughout. As usual the broccoli rabe was excellent. A dining companion said it was the best she'd ever had. There was just enough so it wasn't overwhelming and there wasn't a hint of bitterness to it. For the main meal the grilled tuna was a nice sized portion. The accompanying sauce was light and creamy, yet with a tartness that matched well with the tuna. Other excellent dishes were the shrimp fradiavolo and the shrimp scampi. Both were large bowls of pasta with shrimp. The fradiavolo sauce was spicy, yet not too hot. Another person had the fettuccine alfredo which was in a light creamy sauce. Accompanying the meals is my favorite part of the meal, their italian bread which is warm and soft inside and out. It's perfect for pulling apart and dipping into a blend of olive oil and balsamic vinegar which remain on the tables. The gourmet pizza seems to be made out of the same soft, tasty dough. And, to top off the dish is a beautiful magenta/lavender and white orchid flower head.
Service was at a good pace, not rushed. The ambience of the restaurant is small and cozy without feeling like you are sitting on top of each other. The presentation of all the dishes is that of an upscale Italian restaurant yet at a price that's affordable. I also love the fact that they use large wine glasses for the wine. It adds to that upscale feeling. They only take reservations for parties of six or more so be prepared for a wait for dinner at this hidden Italian gem. |
