Had an Anthony's Gourmet when I was visiting Ann Arbor last month. That what THE BEST pizza I've ever had in my entire life.
<p>
I have lived in 10 different major cities and have never been so impressed with a pizza pie... and I've been with many pies!
<p>
Yes it takes longer. Yes, it costs more. Is great food fast? Is great food cheap? <rhetorical>
<p>
If I ever need an excuse to return to Ann Arbor, Anthony's Gourmet Pizza will be it. |

(A true story from last winter)
A wonderful and tragic thing happened to me a few months ago. On a trip to Ann Arbor, I accidently tasted a slice of a medium gourmet with mushrooms, black olives and yellow peppers. At first, I thought nothing of it. Hey, it's just pizza right? What's the big deal? Now I understand why my friends begged me not to indulge. Sure, I admint it - it was good. Ok, yes, I moaned a little bit with each bite and I began to chew with my eyes closed. I just figured that was some sort of Ann Arbor thing. I wanted to fit in so I surrendered to the energy of those oh so carefully balanced peppers; I went along for the ride. The tragic part of this story was returning to my frozen homeland to realize I was all alone. No Anthony's, no delivery - no more pizza worth moaning about. "My God, this may as well be some fashionable suburb in Moscow." I knew right then and there, I was screwed but good - pasties were not going to cut it. This is the part that still has me freaking out. Last night, 325 miles (that's one way) north of Ann Arbor, a full six hours after it left the oven, I was able to reunite my tastebuds with a few slices of pure Gourmet perfection. Two regulars from Anthony's had heard my cry for help and drove non-stop in a noisy car, through blowing snow, over the Yugo-sucking bridge to meet me at a remote gas station in the middle of nowhere. Within one minute after their arrival at the dark and snowy party store outpost, the box containing the pie was carefully removed from the trunk and slowly opened the once-steaming cardboard jewel case. We all climbed into the car, delicately removed our slices in preparation for what was to be a first for all of us. Oh yeah, it was just as I had remembered. Heads tilted, eyes closed and plenty of primal moaning. Perhaps the long wait had made the fruit that much sweeter. Even though the pie was nearly frozen, it didn't detract at all from the total flavor explosion that left me weak in the knees. We knew no one had ever waited six hours and gone 325 miles to consume a fresh Anthony's Gourmet. This was NOT some crazy publicity stunt and it certainly wasn't intended as a test of mental toughness of the two extraordinarily thoughtful delivery guys. This was about three people doing what it took to get together to enjoy a pie that has no equal. |

Excellent. Can't find better pizza anywhere to match their Chicago Style Deep Dish. Recommend: Pepperoni, Zucchini, and Onion with Spinach. Sauce is superb.
Wish they would ship nationwide.
We miss you here in Phoenix, AZ.
Worth the wait. |

Well, I haven't tried anything new in years, but Anthony's Deep Dish Chicago Style was peerless back then, and still great.
Waits are long though, at least for the Deep Dish Chicago - an hour usually. Also, it's a couple inches thick and dense -- a small will feed 2-3 people. |
