Big Ed's is an Oak Ridge tradition. The restaurant is housed in an old, dark, high-ceilinged storefront in Oak Ridge's original townsite district. Under founder "Big Ed" Neusel, the restaurant served up pizza, beer, and soft drinks; jobs for generations of local high school students (many of whom considered Big Ed a second father); support for local high school sports; and local color for myriad U.S. and foreign visitors to the city.
Nothing much has changed since Big Ed's death. The restaurant is still operated by members of the Neusel family, still serves the same food and drink, and still is decorated with an eclectic mixture of sports artifacts, memorabilia from past visitors to the restaurant, and photos and caricatures of the oversized figure of Big Ed himself.

The crust was not thin and crisp and the cheese was not put on first and tomatoes second. If I want a grilled cheese I'll go to a diner. |

I was born in Knoxville, and moved to Oak Ridge when I was 8 years old. Now I live in Daytona Beach. I lived about 5 minutes away from Big Ed's until I was 21.
First of all, I love the pizza. If you would like to try a pizza unlike any other 'chain' store, then eat at Big Ed's.
People wonder why Oak Ridgers like it? It's the atmosphere totally. To see all the Oak Ridge Football memorabilia is a great refresher. Big Ed's is the place to be during a high school football half-time. Especially since the football field is about a 3 minute walk away.
Please, if you don't live in O.R., don't be hating it. If you wonder why the service isn't the best sometimes... Well, it's cause Big Ed's has always hired students and kids that are not doing the best in school or have had problems in the past, trying to give them a second chance. |

We live just over the boarder in KY and drive several times a month for the hour trip to consume Big Ed's Pizza. We have done this for 20+ years. It's not worth the trip if you don't have a burned mouth after the first bite!!! As a child I loved looking for Big Ed at the back of the bar... He made your b'day special with a t-shirt and candle in your pie!! We have started the tradition with our own children. |

Big Ed's is a southern tradition. Just like Krystals and Krispy Kreme. I can't go back to East Tennessee without dining at Big Ed's. I really don't give a fat rat's a** what anyone else thinks. I love Big Ed's. 'nough said.
